ITINERARY FOR THE ATLAS MOUNTAINS VALLEY AND BERBER VILLAGES 5 DAYS

Hike the Atlas Mountains' most popular mountain location. Reward yourself with a once-in-a-lifetime dawn and earn the views from the plains of the Atlas mountains. This physically demanding hike is not for the faint of heart, but it is well worth the effort, and our guide will ensure your safety as you reach the peak.

DAY 1: MARRAKECH –IMI OUGHLAD –TIZI N’TACHTE –TIZIANE

We travel through the moulay brahim canyon and upper valleys to reach the higher foothills of the western high atlas mountains and our trailhead at imi oughlad (1450m), with the jbel toubkal (4167m), aglzim 3650m, and aksoual 38847m towering above us. At this point, we disembark from our truck and join the Berber muleteer team. We depart in a north-westerly direction for a two-hour acclimatization hike up switchback mule tracks, passing through cornfields, woods, pine, and juniper, to the tizn'tachete (2000m), where we will pause to take in the view of the imlil and ait oussaden valleys before continuing for another half hour to imi n'ifri and our field picnic. Then a leisurely two-and-a-half hour hike south-west down a dirt track to assif n' ait oussaden and the red clay terraced town of tiziane (1750 m) for our bivouac / gite accomodation.

DAY 2: TIZZIANE - TIZI N’TAGHRHOURTE - D’KNT

We now begin our hike up the assif n'ait oussaden valley, passing through wallnut groves, up to tizin'taghrhourte (1995m), and through a rare almost flat stretch to reach assaka spring, where we will stop for our field picnic in the midst of awesome silence after approximately two and a half hours of relatively easy walking. Our afternoon hike will lead us along the forest's borders until we reach the Berber settlement of D'knt (1870m) or agouns n Assoul, where we will eat supper and spend the night in a gite.

DAY 3: D’KNT - TIZI N’TAGDALTE - AZIB N TAMSOULT

We began our morning's three-hour hike up through walnut orchards, maize and barley fields, greeting the numerous sheep and goatherders - as well as women and children hunched over with 20kg bundles of faggots and dried herbs. We travel the tizin'tagdalte to the descent through the juniper woods, where we will halt for our lunch. Once refreshed, we continue down winding higher slopes trails for around three hours until we reach a little river at the entrance of the valley of assif n'ait oussaden. From here, we approach the town of Tizi oussem (1850m) and then ascend to our tent in the summer village of Tamsoult. Enjoy this 5-Day Berber Villages Trek.

DAY 4: ÂAZIB TAMSOULT -TIZI AGUELZIM - TOUBKAL REFUGE

After breakfast, we head off eastward on a reasonably challenging hike up winding mule paths to the Tizi Aguelzim (3550m), and then south-east for another three hours to the Toubkal Refuge, which marks the spring snowline at 3207m, and where we will eat our supper in bivouac surrounding the Refuge.

DAY 5: TOUBKAL REFUGE - SUMMIT JBEL TOUBKAL- SIDI CHAMHAROUCH - IMLIL - MARRAKECH

A very early breakfast in order to depart at 6 a.m. in order to reach, after a three-hour difficult climb, the Maghreb's highest mountain (4167m). The view from this vantage point is truly breathtaking. When you are ready, we will descend through the Ikkhibi Sud or South Cirque for an easy two to three hour descent down to the Refuge for a lunch. After lunch, we will continue north via the steeply falling, zigzagging paths of the Assif n'Isouhouanem n'Ouagounss Valley's upper slopes, towards the Shrine of Sidi Chamharouch. Set by a waterfall, this site features a pilgrimage'marabout' shrine, which is likely a relic of a pre-Islamic civilisation but is off-limits to non-Muslims. Another two hours downhill will get you to the town of Imlil, the starting point for the majority of treks prior to taking the shuttle back to Marrakech. End of our 5-Day Berber Villages Trek.
